135 km south of El Quesir, with a new airport this is the gateway to the south. Long gone is the arduous transfer from Hurghada for the reward of diving what are arguably the best dive sites within the Egyptian Red Sea.Tourism is still in its infancy but it will not take long for it to take a grip. At the moment there are still signs of the pioneering divers that discovered this area more than 10 years ago, at the Eco Lodges of Marsa Shagra and Nakari.

Diving

The highlight of diving around Marsa Alam is the dive site of Elphinstone Reef which can be accessed as a day dive. This reef drops off into the deep blue and is famous for schooling hammerheads and oceanic white tip sharks. Other famous sites include Dolphin Reef and Fury Shoals all of which can be dived from a land based holiday. Another popular way of diving this area is combining a hotel with a mini liveaboard where you get the best of both worlds.

Accommodation

Even though the eco villages of Nakari and Shagra are not as isolated as they used to be there still remains the pioneering spirit. While others nearby are experiencing home from home comforts here you will notice the stars, the sea laping on the shore and the silence of the desert whilst around a camp fire.
