Destinations we offer > Portugal, the Algarve > Algarve Resorts

The Algarve has been a popular holiday destination for many years but has never been on our diving map. With the arrival of Ocean Revival this is about to change as it ticks so many boxes. Not only are there four great wrecks to dive, there are some fabulous beaches, stunning golf courses, excellent restaurants and many family activities all within two hours of the U.K.

Being so close means it is a very flexible destination and is ideal for a short weekend away or the main two week family holiday. The diving can be combined with golf and there are many top quality courses around the Lagos area. Nightlife can differ from clubbing in Praia Da Rocha to a romantic meal overlooking the estuary in Alvor.

The accommodation is varied offering apartments that are ideal for groups or families, budget hotels for divers and others with spa facilities to pamper non diving partners.

Praia Da Rocha

This vast and spacious sandy beach stretches for more than a kilometre. Practically deserted in spring and autumn but packed in the summer this beach of the Algarves second largest city Portimao is an attraction for everyone.

The eastern end of the beach meets the estuary of the Arade River where the marina is situated. This is where the dive boat departs from to the Ocean Revival Park and is a great location to relax afterwards.

For those looking for apres dive excitement then this is the place in the summer with a wide range of restaurants, bars and clubs.

Alvor

This delightful old fishing village blends in beautifully with its natural surroundings. Narrow alleyways lead down to the harbour and the lagoon. Beyond this a wooden walkway leads through the reed beds to a fine expanse of sandy beach.

As you would imagine the pace here is very relaxed which is complimented by the 8 golf courses nearby. A game here overlooks the river estuary, beach, lagoon and Alvor, meaning a bad round doesn't totally spoil your day!

Couples and families are best suited to Alvor and the accommodation mirrors this with either beachfront apartments or hotels having varied facilities to cater for both groups.

Lagos

Although an earthquake of 1755 caused great damage, the streets and squares of Lagos have retained much of the charm of a town hundreds of years old. On the site of the old medieval town the houses preserve much of their former character in the stonework around their windows and doors, in their wrought iron balconies and in the cool, shady areas created by the narrow streets.

The town has a rich seafaring history and in the 15th century was the main embarkation port for expeditions to Africa. The resulting trade attracted merchants and bankers who poured their wealth into new churches and sumptuous houses.

A town rich in history, culture, architecture and a great restaurant! Don Sebastiao.

4* Vila Gale

The hotel, located on the Meia Praia beach area and 2 km from the centre, opened in April 2009 and is of a modern design with striking and impressive decoration. Very much 'Art Nouveau'!

Diving

The diving around Lagos has a different dimension to it rather than just wrecks. The sandstone cliffs that stretch from Lagos to Sagres have eroded over time forming numerous caves and caverns. Particularly interesting sites are Grutas de Sagres & Ponto dos Caminhos both of which have caves & caverns offering constrasting light conditions.

This area is also unique for its nudibranchs which has 20 species. Pedra de Porto de Mos is one such site where cavities in terraces formed from volcanic rock allowed hot water or steam through, the nudibranchs can now be found in these veins. Obviously a magnate for underwater photographers they have the challenge of capturing an image of the Algarvia Alba, a new species of sea snail discovered in 1988, which as yet has not been photographed.
